Panadura, Sri Lanka - JusticeMakers Fellow Harshi Perera visits the home of Ramani Perera and her son Sugath. They show her their new dwelling, as Ramani is afraid the roof will soon fall off the old one. Ramani tells the story of how her husband were tortured and brutalized by the police, then put in prison without a trial, for simply having drawn water from a well on land that had recently been privatized. After the incident both men were left with lasting physical and psychological repercussions, and have since died. Since then Ramani has been an active defender of human rights in her community.
